Day 17 : Friend
Matthew 11:19
Jesus said, The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him? A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners?’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.
This passage comes right after one we have already talked about during this series. John the Baptist is in prison and asking if Jesus really is it. Jesus sends words back from Isaiah and sends back testimony about what He is doing that points to who He really is. Then he turns to the crowd and is talking about John. Jesus talks about how he is prophesied about but the world cannot receive him with worldly eyes or hearts. We need the help of the Lord to understand spiritual things. The above verse is actually Jesus talking about himself. He is probably speaking this way in an almost sarcastic tone but to teach them what the Father is up to.
Let’s think on some ways Jesus acted as a friend in these ways. Yes, he was friend with a tax collector, a dishonest, cheating tax collector. Yes, he made water into wine at a wedding that was better than the original wine. Yes he called Zaccheus out of a tree and went to his house to eat. Yes he let a woman wash his feet with his perfume. Yes he stopped and talked to and healed people who others would walk past. Yes he talked to people with questionable pasts who were outcasts because of their sin. Yes he shared his past passover meal with his best friends pointing to his death and perfect fulfillment and then washed their feet. And he even tells us why…..
Luke 5:29-32
And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at the table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Jesus came to save sinners from their sin. May we never be too proud of ourselves and our knowledge like the Pharisees and miss the point. I pray the Lord will guide us in His word to tell us the truth of who He is and who we are and we will continue to humbly accept his forgiveness of our sins so we can walk in his power to obedience. I believe a life lived His way is our best way.
John 10:10
Jesus said,
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Thank Jesus for coming to save a friend like you.
