Day 13: Light of the World
John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus spent significant time on earth teaching so that we can follow in his way. We also know he is the Word of God so its no surprise that we have this verse:
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
God’s ways may not always make sense to us. The results of a life lived for him make not make sense. Why do young, amazing people die? Why do things not go as we have hoped for when we pray? Great questions. Sometimes things seem so bleak and hard but I pray we will not lose focus on what we have in our salvation. We have light. We have help from God’s word that tells us that things will be hard because this is a fallen world but our hope is that one day we will be delivered from it all in Heaven.
Lets consider what the world looked like when the light of the world was murdered on a cross:
Luke 23:44-47
It was about the sixth hour (noon), and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour (3:00pm), while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. Now the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!”
The world went dark, in the middle of the day. Can you even fathom how overwhelming that was. For the light of the world to be removed?? I bet the darkness felt darker than any night, I bet it felt heavy.
I realize we do not know exactly when Jesus was born, like what calendar day. And I’m ok with that. I think December 25 is a great day. It is 4 days after the darkest day of the year which is a perfect time to light up the world with twinkle lights to celebrate the Light of the world. To be grateful for the star that led the wise men to him. To remember that we do not live in darkness but have his light in our lives to guide and comfort.
Before Jesus comes again, there will be darkness again:
Luke 21:25-28
And there will be sings in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Jesus said that. These are his words. It will happen. Im not sure if we will watch from heaven or straighten our heads on earth. Its pretty stunning that the sun and moon and stars will be involved!
Lastly, what will it look like when all this is said and and done on earth, the battles are done, Satan is done, sin is done?
Revelation 22:1-5
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruits, yielding tis fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were from the healing of the nations. No longer will be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And the night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
Asking God to graciously light our lives with his presence, light our way with his word and give us hope that although this world can seem dark, His presence sustains us and will be our light for eternity.
