Day 20: Shiloh
Genesis 49:10
The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Alrighty, lots going on here. First of all, this is just before Jacob is about to die. He calls his sons together and speaks prophecies over all their lives. Some are good, some are harsh.
Remember that family is super, crazy important to God. He chose the family to pass his story along. He created Adam from dust and made Eve from one of Adams ribs but after that, he carried his turn along in families. But he didn’t just tell the story of Himself through fathers and mothers passing along the story to their children, he kept the prophecy in his family too. So much so that when we ready the lineage in the beginning of the New Testament in Matthew, we can pick out names and we know how they fit in. That family was not perfect, and neither is their story, it is not squeaky clean and neither are we. God is calling us to perfection: he’s calling us to believe and with that belief comes the Holy Sprit to teach and give us power to walk in obedience.
Matthew 1:1-2
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
In that intro sentence, we see just 3 names, then it goes on to fill in all the names in between. David: David was the king whose throne will go on forever. Abraham: Abraham was the family that God chose to start it all, to whom the original call came.
But the name we are look at today is Shiloh, so where is Shiloh?
That phrase “until tribute comes to him” can also be translated:
Until he comes to who it belongs,
Or
Until Shiloh comes,
Or
Until He comes to Shiloh.
This takes a minute to think on.
A Tribute is “an act, statement, or gift act is intended to show gratitude, respect or admiration.”
Shioh is used 32 times in the Old Testament but only one time referring to the person of Jesus.
In the New Testament, 3 times Jesus is related to this word, Shiloh, and most of them have a relation to brining a peace bringer like Ephesians 2:14: For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility….
So if we think about these things all combined: Jesus as king, that is just confirmed over and over again. Jesus is the king from the line of Judah, yes, we do believe that. The kingship belongs to Jesus and will stay with Jesus forever. Then hinking on tribute: Jesus was the king until it all was fulfilled and He received the gift of our gratitude: where Jesus sits now, with His work complete, He is receiving the gift of our gratitude- our worship.
This name is a bit hard for me to wrap my brain around but I know this: the prophecies are true, and the hope to come is real, and while we wait for it all to make sense, Jesus gives us peace and is worthy of our worship. All of this glorious story is passed through a family and we have the opportunity to keep passing the stories through our family. The power of Jesus resurrection gives us the power to live in obedience through the Holy Spirit. Lets keep getting to know our King Jesus.
