Day 12: Holy One
John 6:66-69
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Here is the scene:
Jesus has been out and about with his disciples a minute and has gathered quite a crowd. So much so that this chapter recounts Jesus feeding the 5,000. Then the disciples left in a boat and Jesus walked on water to them.
Then Jesus was telling them that he was the bread of life. He told them that he had come from Heaven to do the will of the Father. Some of the guys there were like: isn’t this Jesus from nazareth, we know his parents, what is he even talking about?? Then he calls them out and goes further. He talked about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. And yes, that sounds atrocious. But here is what Jesus is pointing to: the Passover. What 2 big things did they eat at passover? The unblemished lamb whose blood they put on their doorframes and unleavened bread. The unleavened bread had no yeast in it, they didn’t have time to let it rise because they had to leave in the middle of the night. Yeast is what makes bread soft and fluffy but you’ve got to let the yeast sit in the dough a while before you can bake it into bread. But in the Bible, yeast also represents sin. Every year, when Jews celebrated the Passover meal by eating a roasted lamb and unleavened bread, they were remembering that night and celebrating being spared from the angel of death and freedom from slavery and oppression to serve God freely. So when Jesus says he is the bread, he is saying he is the provision from God without sin, and his blood is that like the lamb. He is the fulfillment of the better covenant with God. The relationship with God we live in today. These things must be heard with spiritual ears though and understood through the full context of scripture.
Verse 60 in John 6 says many disciples heard it and said it was just too much. They were offended at what he was saying and turned to go back home. Jesus told those that remained that his words were spiritual and needed to be understood by God’s help. So now read the passage again.
John 6:66-69

You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
His true disciples were able to hear that His words were for eternal life. They recognized Jesus was Holy. You have too. This is why we continue to read His word, listen to teaching about His word and pray that the Holy Spirit helps us to understand and remember. The words of Jesus will lead us to eternal life and help us in the life we live now. I actually really love the response of the disciples: even when words are tough and hard to understand, I pray we will remember that His words are eternal because He is the Holy One.
