Day 6: Inexpressible Gift
2 Corinthians 9:6-15
The point is this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written,
“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever.”
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of his services not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
This is not my names of Jesus that I am working from, it was a list given to me. Out of curiosity, I took the names and the scripture references and began to do this. I’m not sure I would have assigned this verse to this name but I think we will look at it and see how these verses can encourage us and make an impact on our lives.
I think we would certainly agree that Jesus is a gift that we can begin to give words to! “Inexpressible” is like unspeakable, something that leaves us without words to express how great it is!
After reading this passage several times, it is a progression of how the grace Jesus gives to us turns into thanksgiving to the Father.
For context for us non-farmers: to sow means to plant seed. To reap means to gather the fruit of the crop. So it starts out that those who plant seeds into others lives will see fruit from it. If you plant a lot, you will get a lot of fruit. If you plant a little, you will gather a little. God is behind this growing, almost like he is the provision of the sunshine and the rain. When the fruit is gathered, it will produce thanksgiving to God. Think of when I make a meal and we sit down and say our prayer and thank God, that is exactly what this is sating. At the end of this passage their is a summary sentence: when we submit to giving out of the generosity God supplies because of the work Jesus has done in our lives it will be known it was God with us. This process is the gift and Christ is at the center!
What is the seed that tis being sown and what is the fruit that is being harvested? My mind goes straight to the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, thankfulness, gentleness, self control. God is giving us the opportunity, through the grace of Jesus, to plant these things in the lives around us. That is certainly a gift.
