Day 18: King
Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
Righteous and having salvation is he,
Humble and mounted on a donkey,
On a colt, the foal of a donkey.
This quickly brings to mind the fulfillment story from Matthew.
Matthew 21:1-11
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a cold wither. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,
“Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”
The disciples went and did as Jesus directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and the followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Jesus was born to be king! It was a part of the plan from the beginning. God told us the plan, showed us the plan all along the way and made the plan happen. It was a rescue plan.
He sent a star to confirm it in the sky:
The wise men, one of my favorite verses in all of scripture:
Matthew 2:1-2
… behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we say his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
King Herod knew this was no joke, no coincidence, nothing to take lightly. He was so threatened by the birth of this king that he killed all the babies in the area that age just to try to take him out. Thankfully God knew and sent an angel to tell Joseph to get his baby out of there and they went to Egypt.
The baby king lived and here near his death, he was brought into town on a donkey as prophesied. The prophesy said he was a king but some did not know who he was and others called him a prophet. One of the main verses that lead me to write y’all these this month was that phrase: the whole city was stirred up and said “who is this?” I picture it like a true parade, some were totally engaged shouting “Hosanna!!” Which means “Oh save!!” Meanwhile others happened upon the parade and were like, what’s going on? I do not want that to be us. I want us to know His word and His light and His was so that we recognize Him in our lives.
When John tells the story in chapter 12, right after that verse in Zechariah is quoted it says, verse 15: His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
But wait, then it goes on….
Verses 17-18
The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.
I pray we remember what God has done! I pray we will continue to go to meet him. I pray we will continue to tell others the testimony of Him in our lives.
Jesus came as King. Let’s remember what He has done, look to see what He is doing and, very importantly, recognize him as King.
