Day 2: Wonderful Counselor
Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be on his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Price of Peace.
The book of Isaiah was written about 700 years before the birth of Christ. Isaiah was writing to warn the people about the consequences of the choices they were making, challenging them to return to the Lord and telling them about God’s plan to rescue His people. Jesus was at the center of His rescue plan. Nestled in the book of Isaiah is this description of Jesus.
Isaiah called Jesus a wonderful counselor before he was born. Several New Testament scriptures come to mind about how true that is:
Hebrews 4: 14-16 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, then Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who was in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
If Im going to ask someone for help, I sure would like to know that they understand what I was going through. This passage reminds us Jesus has been through to it all! And he is inviting us to ask him for help.
When I think of a counselor, I think of one who listens and helps with our problems. I think of someone who is wise and can give insight into how we feel and how to better deal with our feelings. I also think of one who directs us into making good choices about our futures. Listen to Jesus’s description of the Holy Spirit….
John 14:15-17, 25-27 Jesus speaking: If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom then world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you… These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
Does that sound like a Wonderful Counselor to you?
Gracious Father, let us hear the lessons you are teaching us from your Word. Let it be bread that satisfies our hunger and strengthens us. Let your Word store in our hearts and let your Spirit remind and counsel us throughout our days. Let us live in obedience to you that leads in your way of peace. Amen
